Here is a a very long summary, that only gets you to the beginning of a story, whose working title will be Year75. I’m just going to refer to all the characters with numbered names as #s (even though most don’t go by their assigned numbers anymore).
(I have no knowledge of science, this is uh.. very soft sci-fi)
Prologue, Year 58-73:
#s were test-tube babies that were the first wave of humans to have drugs tested on them that would enhance human genes to better adapt them to space travel. The testing was rushed and not enough previous research was done beforehand because of cuts to research budget, and money being allocated to the promotion of these new drugs.
The testing failed miserably, even with the previous results on monkeys the results that appeared in humans were so off-mark that more than half the fetuses stopped developing after a few months and a quarter of infants shortly died from serious genetic mutations. The remaining subjects had a wide spectrum of mutations that led to both physical and mental abnormalities. The results of this test were kept under wraps, anyone involved in it were forced to take an oath of silence, if it was broken or even suspected to be broken they “mysteriously” disappeared.
The remaining researchers who didn’t immediately leave the company were told to make the drug acceptable for humans within the next 15 years. It was modified and tested over and over but to no avail. Over the next 15 years no progress had been made. By this point so much money had been poured into this super-drug that the company had no choice but to proceed. Their incredible greed, stemming from the thought of how much money this drug would make, kept them pushing for it’s release. They want to release the drug this year, whether it’s perfected or not.
By this point the subjects who had been the first and last human test subjects were reaching maturity. The company knowing they couldn’t keep teenagers locked away forever (they were also getting costly to keep around) decided to give them a substantial amount of money and let them go. They didn’t worry about their subjects memories because they had never been told why they were in kept in that environment, and had never known the outside world. A few stayed in the facility for reasons that won’t be disclosed yet. (The main story begins here)
Our Earth, Year 57:
The Earth is recovering slowly from a state of disarray after wars over natural resources had destroyed many developed countries. Almost all power is drawn from nuclear plants and because of the money invested in previous wars the state of plants held by the government are deteriorating and radiation leaks are out of control. Contact has been made with a neighboring alien planet who, over 50 years, have slowly visited Earth (many of whom own big companies and employ humans back on their home planet for little pay. Ok it’s alien outsourcing.) All the radiation and alien/human intermingling has had varied effects on humans, and physical anomalies are common enough to make the mutations in the #s less absurd.
(note: Aliens made contact with humans, after nation after nation cut space research because they figured it was futile, and they had bigger issues, like wars and resources, to worry about.)
Resistance:
Resistance groups at the beginning of the wars were strong, there were many activists who fought for basic human rights that were slowly being ignored in the panic of wars. There were also groups fighting companies who had an iron grip on governments, and who were concerned only with profits. After 30 years of war and Earth looking like a huge slum, these groups petered out because people couldn’t be bothered with fighting for others when they had to fight for themselves.
In the present the state of Earth hasn’t improved very much, but it has stabilized and some of the groups are re-surfacing. One in particular is said to be led by an alien who is trying to uncover the heavily guarded and obscured truth of a certain super-drug being manufactured on Earth.
ALRIGHT. So now that I have that written out, I can focus on characters, whose stories take place at many different points but whose ~*~* fates are intertwined*~*~
***I didn’t re-read this, please excuse my poor grammar and spelling. Whoever read all of that, I love you, I also love being asked questions, it prompts me on things that I have probably overlooked.
